Manic (Link) Monday: First Edition
Most of you are probably reading this first edition of “Manic (Link) Monday” on a Tuesday, as I was slooower than a tortoise who quit competitively racing the hare six two centuries ago in getting this post actually posted on Monday. In all fairness it was indeed finished before midnight tonight, but honestly who in their right mind is awake past 1 am on a Monday night? I mean, it’s a school-night, right? And also, I digress.
Without further adieu, I bring you: Le First Installment of the now-to-be-recurring “Manic (Link) Monday,” wherein I act manic with link-posting from external (and hopefully interesting, and even more hopefully hilarious) sources, for your viewing pleasure. Manic (Link) Monday being no excuse for fluff posts, I will indeed write a bit, too. Or maybe I’ll tell you a story, that I’ve made up, just for you. If you have a particular story-line idea, don’t be shy. My door is always open to your need for nonsensical story-telling.
The point: No matter what I write, I’ll most likely write it manic-ly. Because it’s Monday. Get it? Yeah, me either. Maybe Columbus knows what I’m talking about. But I wouldn’t bet my Thanksgiving Dinner on it.
FREE HUGS
The greatest video on YouTube seen to date, and possibly ever. No, really. (Via a hug-crazay! AnneJelynn)
Also: I started out laughing, and by the end I was crying so hard Chris came in from the other room to make sure I hadn’t just learned that my (non-existent) puppy was run over by the neighbor’s (actually existent) blue pick-up truck.
Viewer Warning: You will probably want a hug after watching this video. You might even want to hug a stranger. Or possibly a member of mall security. Watch at your own risk.
“Six Strong Hands On The Steering Wheel,” Indeed
On October 27th, the Dixie Chicks will release a three-years-in-the-making documentary entitled “Shut Up & Sing.” Not surprisingly, but hopefully to more than one person’s vexation, the film will be met with a much-censored “limited release.” (Thanks! Kerry with a “y”)

This is not the first post I’ve tackled on this particular subject. Nor will it probably be the last. I feel passionate about this particular group of women, and about this particular issue, as do many others. Some agree with my position. Some do not. All are welcome here. Provided, of course, that no one starts yelling in all caps, or attacking individual commenters. I’m pretty tough for a girl. You don’t want me regulating, is what I’m saying. I’ve been known to be a hair-puller.
(That last part was a joke. Mostly.)
If you don’t feel like reading the entire “Why I Would Probably Hump Natalie Maines’ Leg If Given The Chance” post, that’s ok, too. My sentiments regarding the overall issue(s) can be generally and quickly summed up via a little “song” I just wrote, in the Footloose style, key of “Let’s Hear It For The Boy”:
(Feel free to add spirit fingers, and Kevin Bacon, where appropriate)
Natalie, she don’t talk sweet
She’s sure got much to say
But she loves De-, loves De-, loves De-
I know she loves Democracy anyway.
…………………….
Awh, maybe they’re no pro-Bush-O
But they’re a three woman rocking show
Whoa, whoa, whoa, WHO-OH
………………………………..
Don’t worry, I’ll stop with the mock, Kevin Bacon-infused singing now. (You’re welcome.)
But in conclusion, three cheers! for freedom of speech for EVERYONE, dissenters included. Three cheers! for strength and resilience, and for an inability to just “shut up and sing.”

More on taking the long way.
My friends from high school
Married their high school boyfriends
Moved into houses in the same ZIP codes
Where their parents live
But I, I could never follow
No I, I could never follow
I hit the highway in a pink RV with stars on the ceiling
Lived like a gypsy
Six strong hands on the steering wheel

OMG that free-hug-video is the funniest thing EVER. i LOVE it. i wonder if it was shot in chicago… which i LOVE, too!
and the dixie-chicks trailer totally made me tear uo because it hurts to see these amazing women getting attacked, threatened, violated because they spoke their mind. the whole thing wasn’t that big in the media over here but i will certainly try and make it to the movie when i’m over there!
thanks ker, that was a nice manic (link) tuesday :) *smooches*
PS: can’t you come to chicago on the second weekend of november?
okay, never mind the chicago-question. just found out:
1) shot in Melbourne, Australia
2) Good Morning America did a piece on Free Hugs campaigns here in US on the same day.
3) This was shot to go with the song to be a promotional music video for the band.
Those both! had me tearing up!!
I LOVE that hug video. Very cool.
And well, you know how I feel about the Chicks. :)
Loved the first Manic (Link) Monday (on Tuesday). Thanks!!
*smooches*
Awesome post. I watched hug video and now for some reason I might go hug somebody.
:)
LOVE the hug video!!! :)
(And Manic Mondays… even if they happen on Tuesday)
I have to say I was actually up that late last night..but I wasn’t online so I missed out on being your first commenter. Nuts.
I also have to say I have always loved the Chicks regardless of anything they have or have not said. They just plain rock. I don’t understand why anyone would argue over that…
I love that hug video so much! :)
Ha! I love the hug video too. Thanks for posting that!
Love, LOVE the whole album! I bought it the day it was released. What did that guy say at the end of the trailer? I played it a couple of times and couldn’t understand him. “Freedom of speech is fine, but you don’t do it…” something.
I saw that “hugs” video and started bawling like a baby. Maybe I’m oversimplifying things, but this world could use a whole lot more of that…
Hmm Dixie chicks and their views…Hard to say some things about em in a PC world.
Let me start by saying that their music is OK and I actually like listening to it/hearing it on the radio. Overall I think they work great in maintaining a good image of both themselves, their group, and the whole empowerment of woman that they seem to project- all these are great for both them and contemporary music.
But like many of those in the acting and music business, semi-regular peple sometimes get themselves in trouble with flippant comments. If the girls have the opinions that they are esposing to the media about Bush and his current regime. that is fine in and of itself. Keeping the opinions in their closed circles would be fine as well(for example I dislike Bush, and tell all my personal friends, people at the bar, my family etc about it). When a public figure steps up to the podium though and tells such to the media it just spells trouble. When those same public figures cross the line by not only esposing such jargon to the media, but do it at their venue during a concert? Well that to me crosses the line.
Overall I think if those talking to the media in the group would use a modicum of common sense, and this is that by using their current position as a political podium-their sales are being hurt as is their overall image. They need to think a little before telling the media such crap. Just think the Dixie Chicks could have thought for like 2 secs before talking shit about the prez and his policies.
i’ve decided to watch the free hugs video a minimum of once a month, to remind me to stay SOFT! I’ve programmed a reminder into my PDA!
