On Broken Furnaces And Precious Winter Coats

November 1st, 2006

Two nights ago our furnace decided (to make horribly loud screeching noises, yes, and also) to stop working. Incidentally, two nights ago Old Man Winter decided he would come voraciously parading into the eastern side of Washington State, sprinkling a brief first snow-fall and quickly dropping temperatures below twenty degrees. The low two nights ago, officially, was eleven. ELEVEN degrees. Someday I fully intend to inhabit a city that does not (threaten to, and/or actually) dump frozen white precipitation on my head, my car, and the roads, five months out of the year. Chris suggested wintering in Florida. Or Brazil. I’m pretty ok with both of those ideas.

So, as fair and ample warning, you will probably start to notice in the upcoming months that I feel a bit chapped (literally and figuratively), and overall just icy (I live to cheesily pun) about winter. I don’t wholly mean to be anti-winter (the winter holidays are my absolute favorite), but a girl can only take The Frigidity for so long. Unless you are a girl who skis. Or loves the snow. Or both. I am, and have never been, either.

I like to pretend it’s not wholly my fault I never became an Olympic skier and lived to make snow angels, and never once cringed when I saw the snow continue to layer the roadways on which I knew I would get my car stuck, because Lo, the four-wheel-drive equipped vehicle has evaded me since I was sixteen. I like to pretend, because technically, I wasn’t allowed to ski when I was a wee tyke once interested in skiing. I had basketball practice five times a week and games on the weekends, and so, in the seventh grade, when I asked to try my hand at rapidly riding narrow planks of wood down steep downhill gradients, my dad remained convinced I would break something. Like an arm. Or a leg. Or, more probably, just (all of) myself. I have no doubt he was probably right in those assumptions.

And thus ended (my already non-existant) relationship with winter sports and liking winter in general. Permission or no, in all fairness, I’m sure my “Interested In Snow Skiing” phase probably rivaled my “Interested In Advanced Algebra/BeDazzling/Playing The Trombone” phases, thus presumably lasting an estimated all of ten minutes.

But I do admit that winter can be fun. And even snow can be entertaining.

You know what else can be (at least, mildly, I hope?) entertaining? Yep! You guessed it! Wearing winter coats, INDOORS. I know. We are wild and crazy over here. Try to hold yourself back from how badly you wish you, too, could wear your winter coat, INDOORS. Because you know, it’s as cold as it is outside, in your house/apartment/penthouse suite. In fact, if you simply cannot! contain yourself by the sheer excitement of how much fun! wearing your winter coat, INDOORS, can be, I think you should just go ahead and get crazy with us. Photograph yourself wearing your winter coat, INDOORS, and then tell me you did it, and I’ll (be very happy, yes, that mostly goes without saying, and also, if you want) post a link to you and your stellar INDOOR coat wearage. We’ll call it the WinterCoatChallenge. Or, something. You can call it “stupid,” too, if you’d like. No offense will be taken. We over here at kerrianne dot org make no bones about being easily amused. Like this, see:

wintercoats-sm.jpg

Do you see how amused we are? Pretty! amused, indeed. But seriously, it was pretty fun. Picture taken for HeatherAnne, (who initially suggested we document the entire wearing of winter coatage INDOORS; she’s a pretty fun gal, that one) while we were inside yesterday, before the repairman traipsed across town to secure the part that successfully restored heat to our frigid basement apartment, amen.

i am 100% with you on the winter-thing. i like snow, for a day or two and certainly over the holidays, but that’s it. i don’t like to be cold. at all. although i have to say that i am actually looking forward to indoor-season a bit more this year because snuggling up on the couch with your significant other is a lot more fun than alone! i’m sorry you had to be cold but i’m sure your chris [and those indoor-coats] kept you warm :)

*smooches* your way, ker. also, i’ll be on the same continent in a WEEK! weeeeeh! :D

i LOVE the winter. i’ve been going skiing every year since the age of 4 [and as you might be interested to know, never broke an arm, or leg, or anything ;)]. if there is snow and a slope, i am all for it… winter in the city? not so much! i hate being cold and i am cold easily [even if it doesn't get THAT cold, it goes like this: i turn the heater up, jon turns it down ;)]
i should seriously think about the wintercoatchallenge.

i am joined NaBloPoMo, too :)

At least it made a horrible screechy noise to announce its death, in our first apartment, the furnace just very quiety put out carbon monoxide and I’m convinced the only reason we aren’t dead is that the you could see daylight through the roof. Yay for being drafty!

Now that we actually own our house, I’ve been known to sneak downstairs sometimes in the winter and give our furnace suspicious looks.

You know, I’m OK with snow until about January 2nd. Who doesn’t like snow for Christmas? But after that it wears out its welcome.

    Love your new design!

Hola, girl! Greetings from Sahn Dee-ah-go. And you know what that means in Spanish. Anyway, will take picture of me Hooch and I in winter coats - it may be the only time I have to wear one this winter (hah!)

Anyway, should be out of work around noon (post-call - 30 hour worklimit and all), and will call shortly thereafter. Get your gab ready!

    Stampy, out.

And I’ve been complaing about 30 degrees. I’m sorry! Glad the furnace is fixed, although you two are adorable in your coats and hey! No heat means that you must snuggle all the time! :) You know…for warmth.

I will do the indoor coat challenge just as soon as both my coats get back from the dry cleaners. I am currently making do with a measly sweater that is really not all the warm!

I’m liking the new layout. And I’m so happy that I’m going to get to see a new post every day! :)

Kim-Come OVER. What, you say this is a big continent? Whatever do you mean? Oh, how I wish you and C could come let Chris and I take you to dinner. Someday. Someday.

San-Hooray! And I had a feeling you liked the W. I don’t know how I knew, but it was just a feeling. I think I’ve developed a Winterish Sixth Sense over the years. ;) Oh, and yeah, I wanted it to look like “kerrianne” and “category” mixed. You mean the fact that I used an “a” and not an “e,” right?

Jenn-Wow, yeah, I am! now glad it yelled at us. Seeing as how the furnace is located in a closet-type-contraption in our BEDROOM, and gases in there would be not so much welcome, as well, not. Yikes.

WN-I did, indeed! Thanks to Chris. :) And, thanks!

HeatherAnne-You are going to make me blush.

Sam-I think my phone may have eaten your call. It’s been acting as if I gave it acid lately. I maintain I have NOT given it acid. But I did drop it last week. Hmmm…..

    Thanks! Ang & Chantel.

Jenie-It SNOWED today. Because I complained about it, I think. I’m going to post pictures later tonight. And hurrah! for the WinterCoatINDOOR Challenge. I’m excited. :)

You are hilarious. I wear my coat around the house, but that’s mainly because I forget to take it off. Now I DO wear my scarf a lot around the house because once I take it off, it’s like arctic on my neck, so I just wear it all day long. Does that count? It snowed here too. boo hiss.

WOAH! Snazy new site design. Me likey!!

Oh and I think it’s Beadazzle not BeDazzle. Geez.

  14. kerrianne said, on 11.02.06 at 5:21 pm

Jean, Yes! that indeed counts. :) Sometimes (even when we have heat) I forget, too. And then I start sweating.

Haha, Courtney. I think you are correct! For shame on me! It shall never happen again. And if it does I shall BEADazzle you a hat. Or a jacket. Or something. :)

  15. kerrianne said, on 11.03.06 at 3:20 am

Ha! I told you! I couldn’t spell that dang word. You know, correctly. There. I corrected it. What would I do without San? You know, beside create my very own “special” spellings for words? ;)

  16. san said, on 11.03.06 at 1:35 pm

sorry kerr, i wasn’t really specific about the misspelling… i didn’t mean the word “kerragory”[got that - very cool word play ;)] but I meant the category “nablopomo” which you spelled “napoblomo” ;)
