I am a pop girl living in a soda world. I’m from Nebraska, but I’ve been moving around with my husband’s Navy career the last twelve years, and I’ve become accustomed to calling it soda because most of the places we’ve lived I have gotten a lot of blank looks when I asked for pop.
i think it’s funny that “coke” is one of the options. well, in MN we called it “pop” and i think i still do that. even though i usually just say what i want: coke, sprite, sevenup … :)
Pop. We always debated this in college and took enough surveys that we figured out that the geographic line in Pennsylvania where pop changes to soda is somewhere around State College. My in-laws will still try to order soda when they visit and get some really funny looks. My brother in-law said once, “You can’t call it pop! What does it say on the aisle signs in the supermarket? POP?” And so we took him to the grocery store to show him that they do, indeed, say pop.
Haha!! This is ALWAYS one of those hotly debated topics amongst my new Yankee brethern in Pennsylvania whenever we discuss the North vs. the South. (Which surprisingly is one of those conversations that SOMEONE brings up about once every two months.)
Anyways…I always called it Coke growing up in GA, and sometimes still do. Although now that I’ve lived in PA for 6 years, I’ve grown accustomed to saying soda every once in awhile. It just makes things easier for people to understand!!
Another we noticed recently when my mom was up to visit was when we went to the grocery store and she asked someone that worked there “Where are the buggies?” They looked at her like she had two heads!! I had to translate to the guy that she was looking for “shopping carts!” hahaha.
I call it soda, which is fitting as I was born/raised in Northen CA. I now live in Northern TX and everyone I know (and sometimes me) calls it coke.
Pop. I’m in Chicago, btw.
Pop. But I’m Canadian. Does my vote count?
