Best Laid Plans

January 21st, 2008

While about to take off from the Mobile airport two hours ago our captain came over the intercom and quickly muttered something about not going anywhere, as the front windshield of our miniature plane had cracked. Our lovely and Australian-accented flight attendant assured us the plane’s windshield wasn’t actually going crazy so much as it was broken, splintered, incapable of assuring cabin pressure would be maintained.

As vexing as being stuck in a tiny airport is, and as annoying as it is that our reroute ensures we are flying all day and most of the night, I’m thankful the windshield didn’t crack WHILE WE WERE AIRBORNE, as I don’t really have time to fit a fiery plane crash into today’s schedule.

While we’re people watching at various airports, I bring you: a recap of sorts from our southern sabbatical, courtesy of a few of my favorite pictures from the trip:

I need to start flapping my arms in a (possibly/probably futile) attempt to get where you are.

Before I read the last part, I thought you took the first picture in the airport and I though, “That has to be the best airport food I’ve ever seen. In MOBILE at that.”

It looks and sounds like your trip was wonderful (except the airplane snafu, of course).

I enjoyed Portland while you were gone!

Cheer up! Even if the windshield cracks or a section of it is blown out completely, the plane can stay pressurized and fly just like it did. Except WINDIER. I always was a little amused to imagine pilots flying in a super windy cockpit. As long as it was happening somewhere far away from me, of course.

Sorry to hear you got rerouted, but glad to hear you had a lovely trip!
