Rose-Colored Everything

June 7th, 2008

Um, hi! There I went mock-disappearing on you again. What can I say? I like to be posting unpredictable. (Not really. OK, maybe a little.)

In the past week I’ve received emails and comments asking if I’m OK, if I’m taking a break from writing here, if I’m trapped under something heavy.

To answer semi-succinctly and honestly to all three inquiries:

I’m mostly OK, save for the nasty mucus monger that has taken up residence in my nasal cavities in recent days, a by-product of two weekends spent traveling and no doubt being exposed to a variety of pesky and resilient pathogens in the process. I also just think my body is a tad TIRED, amen.

I’m definitely not taking a break from blogging, unless you redefine taking a break to mean that I haven’t come up for breath for two weeks, having assumed a management position at my office until a co-worker returns from a sabbatical of sorts in four to six weeks. The lack of posting wasn’t so much intentional as necessary for my sanity, as twelve-hour days have been less than conducive to excessive time not spent with either Chris or my pillow. Or, both. I am, however, very much looking forward to a new and more sustainable routine, a routine sprinkled with a bit of creative rejuvenation brought to me by Chris, and a few (unexpected, and) early birthday presents.

No, definitely not trapped under something heavy, unless maybe that was meant to be metaphorical, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love love love you for referencing one of my all-time favorite quotes from one of the best movies of all time.

Also: thank you! for asking. You can picture me saying “thank you!” just then the way Will Ferrell says “thank you!” in Elf while he’s cheerily sauntering back and forth between people on the streets of New York who are peddling pithy fliers. If your hilarious image bank is hereby coming up blank: PLEASE, my brethren, I beseech you to RENT IT. It makes no difference (that I just used the words “brethren” and “beseech” in the same sentence, or) that it’s June and most people don’t watch movies in June that are set in December. I promise you that Will Ferrell dressed in a pointy green hat pouring syrup on spaghetti is magic no matter the season.

In more update-y news, I spent the past two weekends in Spokane spending some quality time with my mother and grandmother, digging holes in the ground and various flower pots, holes in which we so carefully placed green shoots and roots and a few handfuls of miscellaneous wildflower seeds, flora and fauna we fully expect to grow beautifully in upcoming months, or else. Here are some of my favorite pictures from the flower bed planting weekend extravaganza:

This is a different growing flower of sorts. A seedling of my sister’s husband’s family, and one of the cutest little girls I have ever seen.

She also happens to be brilliant when she says her ABCs, skipping the boring superfluous letters coming after “Q” and instead building up momentum for the alphabetical finale by repeating “Y, Y, Y, Y, Y, Y, Y, Y” until triumphantly and so excitedly exclaiming “Zeeee!”

We might have asked her to sing her ABCs twelve times over the course of the day. Ok, fine. Thirteen times.

The picture below features my fantastic babycarrot sister and her fantastic husband who happens to have a twin brother who is equally fantastic and is getting married August 1st.

The second trip home was to shower his lovely bride-to-be with gifts of the helpful-to-the-newly-married variety.

The bridal shower reminded me that if I had my own to do over again I wouldn’t have registered for a toaster. As it turns out, we don’t so much eat toast. Instead, I think I would have registered for a house elf. Or a pet psychic.

I don’t think there is a day that goes by that I do not eat toast. In fact, if I ever get married, maybe I will register for multiple toasters so I can have easy access to toast in EVERY ROOM.

    ;)

You referenced two of my all time favorite movies in this post which makes me hope you don’t take too long to post again. I missed you!

Hope your cold is almost gone. I’m still dependent on the tissues at least 10 times a day.

I’m sorry you are still feeling sub-par, babe. I am sitting here as I type with a huge box of Puffs with lotion next to me. My nose is in a sorry state, indeed.

I am also seriously considering mailing you my toaster. It’s super nice and I have used it ONCE since last September. I so wish I were kidding.

Yay. Yay. Yay. There you are :)

And, why not a pet psychic AND a house elf? If I every marry, I shall register for two of each and give you the extra :)

Once we are both better, I think we should have a cocktail or a cupcake. OR BOTH!

I have been known to cook hash browns in a toaster… bit messy, but easier than breaking out the fry pan… bit of a fire hazard though… so keep it away from any window dressings… ahem.

Thanks for posting so we know you’re only buried under work. As you know, I can totally relate!!

I’m so glad you didn’t disappear into bloggy voiddom. yes, i’m certain this is a word at least in my world.

If I ever get married again, I’m going to register at a liquor store.

Oh-em-gee I wish I would have thought to register for a house elf. That would have been so amazingly rad and awesome. As it stands, I registered for a ton of sheets and towels that were desperately needed and I think I ended up with one large bath towel from my grandmother, which was a riot. “Hey! You’re getting married! Here is one towel you can (apparently) share.” Fortunately we did end up with a set or two of nice sheets so we can actually rotate sets now. Hee.

Re: the gardening - I helped my mom plant some things right before the wedding and I was embarrassed to admit that I could totally see why people get into gardening. It is like design! With plants! And as long as you don’t kill them, they look lovely! And now I am sort of on the lookout for a garden nursery in our neighborhood.

So sorry you’ve been sick - I want to invite you and Chris over for a game night soon! Maybe this coming weekend? I have Scrabble and Apples to Apples! I was going to ask about this weekend but Chris came into Daniel’s coffeeshop and they were talking about how you were deathly ill and then it seemed like a bad idea. I will probably email you closer to next weekend to chat about it. :)

House elves aren’t chattel, Kerri Anne! Am I going to have to revoke your S.P.E.W. privileges and take back your badge?!

Do you know what that first purple one is called? We have some like that and they aren’t doing well, but I don’t know what to do about it because I get no useful info if I google “sickly purple flowers”.

Also? We recently replaced our toaster with a toaster oven, which is so much better, because in addition to toast (and poptarts)? YOU CAN BAKE COOKIES IN THERE. 2-4 at a time. Just right.
